British Summer Time Is Officially Over

23 10 2008

Hmm…been rather curious since I first about this from friends who came to UK. Now only i sit down & do proper search…haha…

What is British Summer Time? British Daylight Saving?

In the UK, during summer (e.g. on 30 March this year), British clocks is moved forward one hour from 1.00am GMT straight to 3.00am, skipping 2.00am (time difference with M’sia becomes 7 hours) Having the BST marks the start of the summer. At the end of summer, time is switched backward one hour.

So, why is it called Summer Daylight Saving?

Under standard Greewich Meridian Time (GMT), during summer, sun will rise very very early in the morning, say at 3.00am, while most people are still asleep. People wake up 6.00am onwards, wasting 3 hours of sunlight. By fast-forwarding 1 hour, sun will now “rise” at 4.00am and you will utilise the sun light more. Hence, Summer Daylight Savings. This system is not just used in the UK but also in many countries north and south of the equator. Look here.

The main reasons now for adopting BST are the saving in power given by the longer hours of daylight in the evenings & the increased useful daylight leisure time available to those who work.

Hmm…Why not 2 hours instead of one?

Apparently the UK government had done some trials during 2nd World War (1939-1945) when they adopted a Double British Summer Time and they found out that single BST is still better.

Who was the smart guy who invented this?

William Willet from England, in 1907. He was really ‘tak syok’ (‘fuming’) with the ‘waste’ of useful daylight when he went horseriding in local woods Chislehurst and Petts Wood while everyone was still asleep in summer morning. UK government initially rejected his proposal but later took a try to save fuel and money when their rival Germany (first world war 1914-1918), adopted the strategy.

Now the Petts Wood has become a tourist attraction for walking tours. More on this see here and here.

Oic…so when is BST ending this year?

This Sunday, 26 October 2008, at 2.00am, BST will officially end and you will need to turn it back to 1.00am, therefore experiencing two 1.00am. Time difference between UK and M’sia will then become 8 hours. Pretty simple thing to do isnt it? But imagine last time when the clocks couldnt be turned backwards…haha..

Sooo, be ready to go back in time this Sunday morning! :-P

Who is Barack Obama?

20 10 2008

This is seriously funny & cool!!

In a white-tie charity dinner in New York (Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner) recently, Obama joked about his identity. He is just soo good at poking fun at himself!! Watch HERE.

Few facts that might help you appreciate the video better:

1. Obama’s Full Name: Barack Hussein Obama (YES! Hussein! That’s a reason why he was accused of being a Muslim instead of a Christian.)

2. Obama’s was Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961.

3. Swahili is an African language – Obama’s father is a Kenyan.

4. The name “Barack” means “blessed”.

5. Clark Kent (from Superman and Smallville) is born in planet Krypton, sent by his father (Jor-El) to save planet Earth.

6. McCain claims his policies are different from that of George Bush. About a month ago, Obama ridiculed McCain’s policies in a campaign rally in Virginia by saying “When you put lipsticks on a pig, it’s still pig”. McCain soon accused Obama as being sexist. LOL. Full story HERE.

7. Rudy Giuliani is New York City mayor, who cross-dressed on several public occasions. Read HERE.

Some of his cracking lines that night:

“Contrary to the rumors you have heard, I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father Jorel to save the Planet Earth.

“Many of you — many of you know that I got my name, Barack, from my father. What you may not know is Barack is actually Swahili for “That One.”"

LOL…ehh…just found a longer video in youtube! Click HERE.

OOH!! & Obama’s facebook page HERE!

OMG!! I’m becoming like an Obama’s fan…ahahah…

Money Not Enough

18 10 2008

Money…the root of almost everything we have today…the economy, the development, the prosperity, also the credit crunch, inflation, crime & many many other problems we are facing…..It has such a controversial value that even if it is used for a good purpose, it still brings arguments on how it should be spent / utilised…Something happened lately & triggered this thought…hmm…

Then…i found this online…from the Singaporean movie “Money Not Enough 2″, the sequel…didnt know the movie was released 3 months ago…

& I thought this is really creative…you will appreciate it better if you know mandarin & have watched the first episode of the movie…

Embarrassed…

18 10 2008

Arghhhh…that was the first announcement i made in front of my batchmates of about 200 people…i said “I would like to introduce myself”…then i went on to tell people about the buddy system…on IMU…on some other random stuff…i basically mentioned everything…except my own name…ishhh…

Dont know if many people actually noticed that…only one friend laughed at me…guess it was either no one was listening or they were laughing inside…

Sighhhhhhh….ahahahaha…

I’m IN!

12 10 2008

Wheeeeeee…I’m in, I’m in!

After thinking & talking about it for so long…I’m in!! Went to Strathclyde Debate Chamber again & this time…there were people!! lots of them! It was Thursday evening when the practice was held.

Session started with self-introduction. There were about 10 new members – I was the only newbie from Year 4? sweat…(somehow i think i was the oldest in age among all those present??) haha…then we had a general knowledge quiz! It wasnt a serious one tho…js for the fun…the questions? i could only recall a few:

1. On which eye did Napoleon wear his patch?

2. How much does the interest rate gone up this week?

3. What fish played a part in winning the Chemistry Noble Prize this week?

4. If we only take the number of boats into account, which country can form the world’s 4th largest navy? (my answer was Venice…LOL)

5. When did World War 2 officially end?

The highest score was 6 out of 10, & he got a drink from the president after the session in the pub that night. Me?? I got 1 out of 10…haha…i got the Napoleon question correct – Napoleon never wore a patch!! haha…On the other hand, the interest rate has gone up 0.5% this week, jellyfish helped the Chemist to win the Noble Prize…Disney would form the world’s 4th largest Navy if you only count the number of boats (LOL)…WW2 officially ends on 1990 with the reunification of Germany…

Had some ice-breakers right after that, followed by a round of debate…it was cool to get to debate again! too bad i startled a lot!! havent been talking so ‘construtively’ for quite long…haha…

Headed off to a pub in student union after that…first time i stepped into a pub in scotland? no smoke! which was great…i didnt drink alcohol tho…only orange juice…i didnt want to show my red face in front of new friends…haha..

Enjoyed that night with new friends…wish to be able to commit…but at the same time need to take care of study too…dilemma…hmmm :-S

MPS-UK Student Chapter…do support

11 10 2008

Thanks to Prof Yeoh…i got involved in this…arghhhhhh… :S

Haha..it’s actually not that bad…just that I never expected she would still ‘play a part’ in my life after i left IMU. Was introduced to this pharmacy student from Manchester University, who recently proposed to MPS to set up this a student chapter in UK in order to unite all Malaysian pharmacy students in UK, get them updated about the development of pharmacy profession back home in Malaysia, serve as a platform of network & communication and also a bridge between Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) and students who are studying here.

Had a 3-hour virtual meeting through skype with people from other universities just now. There were people from Cardiff, Manchester uni & Nottingham. I am really impressed with the technology that i was able to chat & ‘have meeting’ with people that I’ve never even met before…haha…anyway, we decided to set up a blog to achieve some of our objectives while working on getting approval from Malaysian Student Department in Malaysian Embassy to be a registered society in UK.

The blog is still new. We’ve only updated the “About” page…hopefully more posts will be in once everything goes on track.

Do support us by reading the blog…Ideas / replies / comments/ messages are GREATLY welcomed! If you are free, you can even contribute articles!! regardless of whether you are still a current Pharmacy student in UK or ex-UK pharmacy students, as long as the content of your article is relevant to pharmacy, studying in UK or about practising…

Thank you! cheers~

Fall for You

10 10 2008

A sweet song to share :)

Fall for You by Secondhand Serenade

The best thing about tonight’s that we’re not fighting
Could it be that we have been this way before?
I know you don’t think that I am trying
I know you’re wearing thin down to the core

But hold your breath
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don’t make me change my mind

Or I won’t live to see another day
I swear it’s true
Because a girl like you’s impossible to find
You’re impossible to find

This is not what I intended
I always swore to you I’d never fall apart
You always thought that I was stronger
I may have failed, but I have loved you from the start

Oh, but hold your breath
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don’t make me change my mind

Or I won’t live to see another day
I swear it’s true
Because a girl like you’s impossible to find
It’s impossible

So breathe in so deep
Breathe me in, I’m yours to keep
And hold on to your words ’cause talk is cheap
And remember me tonight when you’re asleep

Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don’t make me change my mind

Or I won’t live to see another day
I swear it’s true
Because a girl like you’s impossible to find

Tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don’t make me change my mind

Or I won’t live to see another day
I swear it’s true
Because a girl like you’s impossible to find
You’re impossible to find
