• Interestingly…there is a second year Pharmacy student running..for Equal Opportunities Officer…

So, what is the difference between Union election here & that in IMU? BIGGG Difference…

1. Every student can join SRC..But those that needs to be elected…are known as the Executive Council…
2. Union here has got ONE WHOLE BUILDING for itself! 8 FLOORS! & it is full of PUBS & CLUBS! at a cheap price…& safer cos only students with student ID can go in…
3. Union here is like a Parliament…they have debates open to students to attend & take part in deciding important University’s policy…A recent one was a meeting to call the University to terminate contract with Israel companies following Gaza war…did they succeed? I dont know…wasnt there
4. Union here runs one of the best student newspaper in Scotland…Strathclyde Telegraph!! & a student radio station = Strathclyde Fusion! It’s an online radio… Tune in to Strathclyde FUsion here.
5. They have an national student body called NUS…National Voice of Student (I dont know why NUS but not NVS). Few people in the university will be chosen in the election to represent Strathclyde students in NUS…
6. Almost half of the candidates running this year are from Debate Club! Debate Club rocks!! Juniors!! Join debate!! hehe..
7. Being the only candidate for certain post doesnt mean you get the post automatically. If students think you are incapable, they can vote for RON = Re-Open Nomination…you know what it means..
8. Most interestingly!!!! Being elected in the Union means you get a JOB!! yes..a JOB…a PAID FULL TIME JOB! a PAID 9 to 5 JOB!
9. BUt…that means you have to quit study for a year…so you either join ur juniors & graduate a year later…OR..u run for it during ur final year…Only the President, Deputy and Vices are paid tho…if not mistaken..it’s a big commitment…

So, why wait…make sure you cast you vote!!! Get involved…It’s our first but last student election in our university life…hehe…

Wheeeeeee…I’m in, I’m in!

After thinking & talking about it for so long…I’m in!! Went to Strathclyde Debate Chamber again & this time…there were people!! lots of them! It was Thursday evening when the practice was held.

Session started with self-introduction. There were about 10 new members – I was the only newbie from Year 4? sweat…(somehow i think i was the oldest in age among all those present??) haha…then we had a general knowledge quiz! It wasnt a serious one tho…js for the fun…the questions? i could only recall a few:

1. On which eye did Napoleon wear his patch?

2. How much does the interest rate gone up this week?

3. What fish played a part in winning the Chemistry Noble Prize this week?

4. If we only take the number of boats into account, which country can form the world’s 4th largest navy? (my answer was Venice…LOL)

5. When did World War 2 officially end?

The highest score was 6 out of 10, & he got a drink from the president after the session in the pub that night. Me?? I got 1 out of 10…haha…i got the Napoleon question correct – Napoleon never wore a patch!! haha…On the other hand, the interest rate has gone up 0.5% this week, jellyfish helped the Chemist to win the Noble Prize…Disney would form the world’s 4th largest Navy if you only count the number of boats (LOL)…WW2 officially ends on 1990 with the reunification of Germany…

Had some ice-breakers right after that, followed by a round of debate…it was cool to get to debate again! too bad i startled a lot!! havent been talking so ‘construtively’ for quite long…haha…

Headed off to a pub in student union after that…first time i stepped into a pub in scotland? no smoke! which was great…i didnt drink alcohol tho…only orange juice…i didnt want to show my red face in front of new friends…haha..

Enjoyed that night with new friends…wish to be able to commit…but at the same time need to take care of study too…dilemma…hmmm :-S

Strath Debate Chamber

Made a trip to Student Union Building the other day after lecture. Hmm..finally…i found Strathclyde Debate Club! Hmm..now i know why the club isnt listed in the societies & clubs list…because they are fully sponsored by the Union whole year round for everything!! Hence, they are listed as one of the Student Union Activities rather than a normal club…Hmm..sounds interesting…Ahaha…

This is their debate meeting room…there are 2 Debate Chambers…inside the arrangement looked abit like a court…COOL!! i wish IMU had that! Too bad there wasnt anybody there. The whole building was practically empty. Only saw 1 security personnel and several maintenance staff…

But yea..that definitely won’t be the last time i visit that place…hee…

Just came back from debate practice 2 hours plus ago…

It might actually be my last practice with friends in the debate society?? This Thursday we are sending off teams to attend the 4th Asian University Debating Championship, hosted by Malaysia this year, in IIU, Gombak. & when they come back. I would only have about 2 weeks left? & i dont know whether i’ll be free by then…:-(

I couldnt sign up because of other reasons initially, but later felt lucky that i din sign up cos was asked to go to attend this camp at the same period of time by sponsor on a last minute notice…

kinda sad tho to miss this opportunity because last year promised some new friends to meet them again this year…& this year has got more countries coming..including HK, Japan & China..& possibly more hot chics??

Anyway, yea…really have fun debating & practising with u guys…it’s a reason why my 5 semesters in IMU has been so interesting…Thanks!

Wonder if i can carry on debating in Scotland…heard from seniors the schedules will be really tight…& the fact that i would only be there for a year means i wont have much time to do or establish much there…found Strathclyde Debate society website but apparently they havent updated it for years & it is close now…wonder what happen to them…
